On the web...It's now about seven years since I wrote my first website: a frames-driven effort for my then employers Dumfries and Galloway Careers Service, complete with their logo as a background image in the main text window. I then branched out and wrote one for St Michael's Cricket Club, now in it's third template-based version after yet another update to remove some of the more frivolous content. We now also have a wiki to replace the old discussion board and provide the more ambitious with a chance to develop their own pages. In 2002, I got a contract to develop a site for St Martin's College Careers Service and undertook frequent modifications to the content. I gradually learnt to handle php forms, adding to the javascript tricks I was already using. Times move on and the College was taken into the University of Cumbria in 2007, so I rewrote the careers section using the contensis content management programme. We could do with adding more images and some interactive content, but it all takes time. The online chat facility via www.gabbly.com is starting to catch the interest. Over the years, I've learned to write in short paragraphs with plenty of bold text and hyperlinks to hold the attention and have started writing in variable text sizes. A lot of websites have text that is illegible, illiterate or trans-browser incompatible. I think I can do better. |
